Chakrulo

Chakrulo stands as one of the most sophisticated examples of Georgian polyphonic singing. This three-part choral composition originates from Kakheti, Georgia’s renowned wine region, where centuries of cultural traditions have been preserved through oral transmission. The song’s name “Chakrulo” itself suggests something that is “linked” or “chained together,” reflecting both its musical structure and its cultural significance.

The song dramatizes preparations for battle, reflecting Georgia’s historical struggles and warrior tradition. The first recording was made by Zacharia Paliashvili in the village of Vachnadzhiani (Gurjaani municipality), preserving this masterpiece for future generations. The song shares structural similarities with other traditional pieces like “Dzveli Supruli” and “Supruli da Misi Damateba.”

Lyrics

In Khidistavi let’s swear an oath
We have become blood brothers
Let us leap upon Master Mukhrani
Let his roof cave in on his head

Under Master Mukhrani’s serfdom
I couldn’t fill my basket with flour
I couldn’t raise a heifer
I couldn’t yoke an ox to thresh grain

Oh sword, forged in Khevsureti
A Tush gilded you in Telavi
King Erekle consecrated you
And wedded you to the battle

Oh enemy, oppress me, I won’t cry
Tears are women’s right
I’ve been many times in this state
Yet I never groaned with pain

Give me a while, I will sharpen
My sword and I will load my flintlock
So you can reap very finely
Everything you had sown for me

UNESCO Recognition

In 2001, Georgian polyphonic singing, with Chakrulo as a prime example, was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This recognition acknowledged the unique cultural value and the need to preserve this ancient musical tradition.

The Voyager Story: An Unexpected Journey to the Stars

The most remarkable chapter in Chakrulo’s history came in 1977, through an unexpected turn of events. When NASA was selecting musical pieces for the Voyager Golden Record – humanity’s message to the cosmos – Soviet officials strongly advocated for the inclusion of the popular Russian song “Moscow Nights” (Podmoskovnye Vechera). However, the selection committee, led by Ann Druyan, was not convinced of its artistic merit for this historic project.

Seeking expertise, they consulted legendary American folklorist Alan Lomax. Upon hearing Chakrulo, Lomax immediately recognized its extraordinary quality. The version selected features the outstanding performances of Ilia Zakaidze and Rostom Saginashvili, accompanied by the Georgian State Ensemble of Song and Dance (now known as Erisioni) under the direction of Anzor Kavsadze.

On August 20, 1977, Chakrulo began its journey aboard Voyager 2, followed by a copy on Voyager 1 on September 5, 1977. Today, this Georgian masterpiece travels through space, over 16 billion kilometers from Earth, carrying the essence of human cultural achievement to the stars.

Legacy

The story of Chakrulo’s selection for the Voyager mission transcends mere musical recognition. It represents a triumph of authentic artistic merit over political considerations, demonstrating how true cultural excellence can bridge divides and speak to the universal human experience. The fact that this Georgian folk song was chosen to represent human cultural achievement to potential extraterrestrial civilizations stands as a testament to its extraordinary artistic and cultural value.

This ancient song, born in the mountains and valleys of Georgia, now soars through the cosmos as part of humanity’s message to the universe, proving that authentic cultural expression knows no boundaries – whether they be terrestrial or celestial.
